If you found yourself with one viable bud left of an apple variety that would be damn near impossible for you to replace, would you graft it onto a young rootstock or grab a 5 year old apple tree from Home Depot just because it has a more developed root system (granted, those trees are typically pretty bad, but just to get the bud to grow and get some scionwood for next year)?
Go get a larger tree for sure to push wood.
Smaller rootstocks you always have the chance they could die. That’s the whole bench grafting game for me. I know I’m getting whatever percentage of something but I know I’m going to lose trees two months after the graft has taken and grown. You gotta account for that.
