I really want to grow some common European seedless table grapes and West coast seedless table grapes such as Perlette and Black Monukka, but the only sources I have found for these grapes are West Coast nurseries such as Peaceful Valley and others where the grapes are grown on their own roots. However I’m concerned that these grapes will probably succumb to Phylloxera. Is this something I should be concerned about for these seedless vinifera type grapes? I can’t seem to find them from any East Coast nurseries. Is my only option for growing these on the East Coast to cut buds off these grapes and graft them on to a phylloxera resistant rootstock?
Thanks!
Surprised you haven’t gotten a comment. Yes you should be concerned about Phylloxera and many other issues with those grapes out East. They will be very difficult to grow on any rootstock. Most people give up quickly.
If you have a shelter or the right greenhouse you might make a go of it. Even that won’t be easy.
I’d suggest you at least also try some grapes that will be easier like Hope, Faith, Joy, and other hybrids bred for humid conditions.
Thanks for the reply fruitnut! Alas, I was afraid that might be the case. Although I do hear very positive things about grapes coming from the Arkansas breeding program like Hope. I guess I just caught on to the heirloom and Old World fruit bug that I got after tasting heirloom apples and it kind of migrated over to other fruits as well such as grapes haha. For the most part I have been very pleased with varieties originating from Europe including strawberries like Mara des Bois.
