So in my house I inherited four large raised beds in one of the most shaded areas of my yard–they get morning light but by 1 or so they’re pretty much in dappled to full shade. I’m able to grow lettuce and greens in there all right, but everything else struggles. I’ve already added some raised beds in a better location for most of my vegetables, but I’m trying to come up with something I can use these for–I dont use that much lettuce in a year.
I’ve also been getting into more fruit growing and grafting lately, and have been especially interested in seed starting some paw paw rootstocks. It occurs to me that these beds might be a good place for them to get started, but I dont know if I’m setting myself up for failure by not starting the trees in pots–will digging them out of raised beds inevitably lead to root shock down the road?
Alternately, can shadier beds make good nurse beds for other fruit tree seedlings and newly grafted trees? Or do you want to max out the sunlight for those plants in general?
