This one is the runt. The other 2 don’t show this. Is it doomed? Any idea what caused this?
I’m not sure if this is happening with yours, but there is a disease of Pawpaw trees that has been reported in the Pacific Northwest, in which the trees have bark lesions, which show blue streaking in the cambium when cut open. The trees often die. The cause is not known.
Oregon State University,I think,destroyed theirs.Only one variety was resistant.bb
A ‘weed whacker’ would be high on my list of suspect causes.
Yeh , weed wacker is a good guess for the lower damage.
The bark is very sensitive on pawpaw.
The vertical crack may be " southwest " injury ?
Been seeing more of that lately .
It is on the southwest part of the tree. Strange.
Maybe it is a weed whacker like the others said. I have used the weed whacker around the pawpaw trees. But why would it be girdled on all sides? Does the damage just spread like this? It’s only one of the 3 pawpaws that shows this injury.
