Pawpaws in 2022

I have four-year-old “Azimina triloba” trees: NC-1, Overleese, and SAA Overleese.
Which one is better to graft a branch of the “Kentucky Champion” variety onto for better pollination of the “Kentucky Champion”?

Pretty sure Woody recommends Overleese as a pollinator for KY Champion. If you have a tree of it nearby that should be good enough

But on variety description websites it is indicated that the NC-1 variety is earlier than the Overlееsе variety.

I have Overleese and Kentucky Champion next to each other.Maybe it’s difficult to tell by the photos, but the Overleese is ahead of KC in maturity of flowers.
So,if NC-1 is earlier than Overleese, then the latter is a better choice for pollination.

NC-1 is a seedling of Davis like Allegheny.
But Overleese was probably not the pollination parent.
NC-1 tends to be early in most zone 7, 8 & 9a environments, yet late mid season in most Zone (5a to 6a) environments.
Especially those further North.
I’m uncertain about when it ripens in further south (5a & 6a) environments like Utah.
This could have something to do with (Abscisic acid) triggered by high UV-LIGHT & heat, accelerating ripening.
But Timothy Lane in Zone 6a claims that the cultivar is late there.
More research needs to be done both on chill hours & ripening in pawpaw.
Hopefully, with Pomper free from administration duties, he will have time to get grant funds for more research!

A member of Vincent Renaud’s Canadian Pawpaw Growers has several superior seedlings that are open pollinated crosses of Neal Peterson’s & KSU cultivars.
This is believed to be a Tallahatchie seedling.
Fruits weight 680 grams, are extraordinary sweet, unique flavor profile & highly aromatic.
It will be approximately 5 years before available.

(Vincent Renaud & Zacherie Roy) know, but they are not saying.
At least not telling me.
It’s a Candian pawpaw farmer near the Great Lakes.
He has been doing mass planting of 2 cultivar parent seeds for over a decade.
Similar to what you were doing to get Siri Gold Vishnu, Avatar & Free Byrd.
Wish I knew more!
I believe they said it was sweeter than Susquehanna.

I don’t think so. Both “1-4” & “4-1” are yellow inside.
This fruit is 24 ounces, rather than 12 ounces.
Flavor profile is also very different from most pawpaw.

Your Data is incorrect, Zinhead. I am in close communication with Mr. Renauld.
