Pawpaws in 2025!

Sounds like late 2025 based on this comment by Blake

Probably at the international pawpaw conference in September. I have 1-4 seed if youd like to buy some.

Any rumors on the name? I assume it will be a “D”.

Agree the next one should be “D”
You could go out and research notable KSU community members whose last names start with D and let us know

I wonder if they’ll break from pattern and use a first name, such as Desmond (Layne). Probably not.

Are we going to have to wait until “P” to get 4-25 or will that be “Pomper”.

Nah, it will be KSU 1-4 as “Prompt” on release.

are these 10" S&S treepots? i dont seem them listed but i do see 12" and 14". unless these arent their 4x4s

how far up from the ground do you prune the lower branches? it looks like 2’ or so.

so youre saying you put an individual seed in a cell, cover, and wait for the taproot to poke through the bottom of the cell and then pull the plugs to go into the tree pot?

I allow 1 year of growth in cell trays, then transplant into the large, final pots the following spring.

With pruning, I don’t like any branches below 2-3ft. Makes it too hard to mow, string trim, etc.

However, now that raccoons have reached black plague rat proportions in my area (why?) I am considering pruning my trees higher up so as to be able to wrap the trunks in metal flashing to prevent raccoons access to the fruit. This would mean no branches below about 4-5 ft. I’m going to experiment with this.

Raccoons have gotten out of control here as well. They ate the entire crop of one of pawpaw trees and tried to finish off all the others before I noticed. There are millions of wilds around me. They must not like the metal aftertaste either.

do you happen to have a picture of youre seedlings in this state? was confused by the grafted/milk crate picture. so year 1 is sprouted in cells, year two is transplanted into the 10" in tree pots, and year three in the early is the 6 weeks after grafting?

Yes, that is basically correct

Is Hambone ‘Steve’? :slightly_smiling_face: I get confused here.

How’bout ‘Sweet Sheri’, in honor of Sheri Crabtree? Or ‘King Pomper’? What do ya think treefrog?

I tried KY Legend at England’s open house last fall. It was good, but didn’t wow me.

Exciting news- KSU has informed me they are releasing KSU 7-1 in addition to 1-4, in 2025.

I remember 7-1 as having a cherimoya like flavor with lighter flesh. Seed ratio was little high.

I had heard concerns around the shape too, that it’s more tubular, which like you said typically means more seeds and less flesh (or less “pure” flesh).

Yes, banana / tubular pawpaws are generally higher in seed weight. Peterson pointed this out years ago. KSU 7-1 is a more banana shaped fruit. I remember thinking the flavor was very good, but the seed weight seemed to preclude release. Not sure what KSU’s opinion is at this point on it, but obviously it’s favorable.

Which pawpaw variety tastes the most like banana?
