no blooms on the little guys but they’ve survived the winter. small mercies
Hey Blake Sanket here from Suburban Chicagoland in Zone 5b. this is a 3year Sri Gold(Vishnu) bloomin with flowers from the 23rd of April would you recommend cross pollinating it with Mammoth X ? By the way am new to the Paw Paw scene was hoping if any1 can compare the taste of the new Peterson variety Kanawah to the Pompers choice paw paw?
You’ll most definitely get better fruit set if you hand pollinate. Just a tiny bowl and a small paintbrush would be good.
of my 4 pawpaw trees, 2-3 appear to be leafing out faster/better than my oldest tree, which, while leafing out, the leaves aren’t growing in the mid trunk and they have a yellowish color to them. maybe a good time to fertilize? Should I do some water soluble and some granular?
Good news my ksu Atwood which had some dieback feom the last frost is leafing out below the dieback but above the graft
The new growth up top looks good and vigorous. I personally wouldn’t worry too much about it yet. Mine will sometimes push growth out of the previous year’s lower nodes and then abort them if the upper ones really start taking off. Sometimes I purposely pinch them off if I don’t want branching that low.
Maybe others will have a different opinion.
Welp…I gave up on that Carmelo with BSD and decided to cut it out. I’m considering tossing the entire tree. Here’s some cross sections and a slice down the cambium. And nothing bored into that hole…I checked both sides. It’s just a darker spot with a little more rot.
Thats a bummer, on one hand you could just kill the tree/remove it, or see if a new healthy stem comes up later on. Fingers crossed for you either way.
That was this tree. It put the suckers out last year and a lower branch above the graft that looked healthier. But I may completely pull roots and all…still debating. The heartwood was fairly stained blue near where that branch comes out so it may be a matter of time for that one too. But the scions I cut off that lower branch grew well and healthy so I may graft back to a sucker. I’m just worried about this spreading since a lot isn’t known about BSD yet.
It makes me nauseous just how ahead of me you are. Mine are just starting to swell flowers and break buds. ![]()
More possible blue stem…
I was pruning some lower branches off of trees and I had a slower growing Allegheny from OGW (2021 I think) that had a low branch with a lousy crotch angle that I pruned off. There was a hint of blue stained heartwood right near the center. The cambium looked pretty healthy though.
I kept cutting up the branch in 1” sections and it eventually thinned and disappeared.
So I guess the question is if the tree is outgrowing it or is it working outward and upward? It’s definitely discouraging to see.
The ones on the other tree are like 3.5 inches across!
and water, water, water. On the Shore we’re in a terrible drought.
I had killed a KSU-Chappell in its first year (summer of 2024) because I didn’t water it enough. I’m not making that mistake again. I’ve been watering every few days.
Wow ahead of time must be miracles of living in Z8A compared to my Z5B
This will actually be first time having pawpaw too - assuming racoons don’t get it, so there’s a chance i’ll hate it. ![]()
FWIW……I made the mistake of leaving a 5 fruit cluster on one bunch and nearly lost the branch…….it originally was horizontal but eventually was pulled straight down……..luckily sort of supported by an adjoining branch ……also the critters found the first pawpaw drop I ever had and am sure they will learn prompty to climb the tree in the future for a free meal…….Beemster
Yeah I have it supported now - I luckily work from home so I check the yard out basically every day.
