You can graft scionwood that has some swollen buds. It’s just harder. Try getting buds at the base of the shoots. They are the last to come out of dormancy.
As an fyi, I use an old “dorm” fridge to store my scionwood. I can keep it about 31F, so it just barely freezes the scionwood. I let the scionwood thaw out every now and then so it doesn’t dry out. It does a pretty good job of keeping the scionwood dormant. You can buy them pretty cheap at garage sales.

Yeah, but they’re peach, and I’m not a great grafter to begin with!
Plus, I am a good three+ weeks away from good, consistent grafting weather.
Highs in the 70’s in Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday, then low of 19 on Friday. Not looking good if they start blooming on those 2 hot days.
