Wow. That’s something I wasn’t expecting! Gonna have to try it!
I think, so, one can get faster rootstocks for grafting. ?
Or one can make a reproduction without grafting.?

Me thinks that the order of Desirables from Heaton pecans will never get here. May have an angry talk with that mail guy if my order does not get here today!
Just hope that they will be better tasting than the bitter stink bug ravaged pecans that I have been eating. Yuck.
Getting some of their chocolate pecan halves too. Wonder how they go about baking and covering pecan halves with chocolate?
I stopped by the Heaton Pecan Farms store on my way back north on Saturday. They had 5# bags of what looked like Desirable for sale in the gift shop for $35+. More than I was willing to pay for those, and for all I know, they might have been last year’s nuts, to boot.
I was hoping to score some Elliott or Forkert nuts.
But I did detour by Petals From The Past garden center, in nearby Jemison, AL, and had a great visit with Jason Powell and his dad, Dr. Arlie Powell, which more than made up for the disappointment at Heaton.
I have a few pounds of Elliott that I could send you Lucky. Want them? I’ll toss in a few of the Wild #3 walnuts to see what you think of them.
After receiving the order of Desirable pecans yesterday and eating a few of them I’ve come to the conclusion that they are this years pecans. Agree that they are too pricey at about $7.00 lbs. I’ll fell bad if later on Kroger sells pecans for less.
@Lucky_P After ordering I noticed a facebook ad that a lady by the name of Keleta Angel Evans located near you in Union City, TN was selling pecans with the following conditions. You might be interested…
Thousands of pecans for sale, sorted, clean, different species… pick up orders must be 40 pounds or more, $2.50 per pound. I will deliver-if i deliver at 120 miles or less it is $2.50 with a minimum of 250 pounds. Over 120-240 miles is $3.00 a pound with a minimum of 500 pounds.
If the Desirable pecans are bland, maybe for me its a good thing. Sometimes I have problems with indigestion. I won’t want to eat so much. Do like the big pecans. I’m happy with the purchase. May try roasting or pecan butter.
Indigestion caused me to quit eating watermelons.
Hello everyone.
Does anyone know how Michael Wes Rice is doing health-wise?
My last contact with him was on December 10, 2023.
His email address has been deactivated for some time now.
Nut, George Wesley Rice was in very poor health the last I heard from him about 6 years ago. My last email exchange with him was about Dodd pecan which he was considering getting scions from Brownwood.
Hello,
Does anyone have the Dumbell Lakes pecan variety and
some have a tree of this sort that is already bearing nuts?
Are there any info about this cultivars ?
- Franklin
- R5T3/ Ellen
- Iowa Street
- Gustason
- Eugene Ulrich Garage
- Sand Ball
- Peterson # from 1 to 4
I wonder if any of them is a native tree or have records about parentage…
IIRC, R5T3 was a seedling selection introduced by the late Henry Converse, “Dean of KY nutgrowers”, named after his daughter, Ellen. I received scions from Clifford England, 20 years or more ago, that were supposed to have been R5T3, but I have to think that there was a mix-up, as the two R5T3 trees I grafted produce a tiny little nut that is not worth the effort to attempt to gather.
I was recently looking at the bigger R5T3 tree in my main nutgrove, thinking, "I need to cut that thing off at ground level, reduce it to firewood, and let the rootstock throw up some vigorous shoots, and graft one to something worthwhile.
Perhaps @KYnuttrees Clifford England can give details on the ‘real’ R5T3.
Clifford would also be the source for information on the Eugene Ulrich Garage selection
Did Mr. Collier selected any seedling or sport ? I had recently came across a lithuanian nursery which offers a cultivar with similar name Riešutmedžiai internetu Container C2 Height 15-25CM Select summer delivery
It’s quite surprising as they also sell OC-6/Meat and Liberty…
‘Collier’ is a seedling selection made by Mr Collier, from his pecan grove, located near Paducah KY. The nut resembles that of ‘Major’ - of which it is probably a seedling.
I have a graft of ‘Collier’ but it has not borne nuts for me yet.
His daughter and son-in-law still operate the pecan grove which Mr Collier established in the late 1950s.
I suspect that the nut photo is just a stock pecan photo, and not actually a ‘Collier’ nut.
On the web site of the Grimo Nursery I found this offer;
‘Abbott’ Bitcan Graft **NEW
‘Abbott’ is a bitternut hickory cross with a pecan, often referenced as a ‘bitcan’, a blend of the name of the two species. This rare find was discovered by A.N. Abbott of Morrison, Illinois. He found not one but 2 bitcan trees on his property early in the 20th century. The trees were rediscovered about a half century later by Gary Fernald and John Gordon, two members of the NNGA who introduced the trees to pecan researchers. The full story by Gerry Koft is available in the Nutshell, March 1994, the publication of the NNGA.
The bitternut offers the extra hardiness and early ripening, while the pecan delivers its tree form, fast growth, nut shape, nut size, shell thinness and flavor. It can partially self-pollinate, but it produces better by cross-pollinating with a pecan or bitternut hickory. It is one step closer to bringing the pecan to northern climates. Suited for zones 5b-9.
Does anyone have experience with the selection of Abbott .?
20+ yrs ago, Don Cobb sent me a handful of Abbott bitcan nuts, with the ‘pecan’ appearance, as shown above. I ate one and planted the others; I don’t recall flavor or remarkable astringency. The one seedling I grew was not vigorous, and I removed it after a few years; it did have the slender sulfur-yellow buds of C.cordiformis.
My understanding is that the second Abbott tree produced a nut more resembling the bitternut hickory parent, similar to the ‘Folz’ bitcan in the lower half of the attached photo, with the other native pecans growing in its vicinity.
‘Folz’ is astringent, like a pure bitternut.
I got from Wes scions of both sorts Abbott.
But I see no nuts yet
Here my Abbott Thin shell
Here my other Abbott but I lost them in 2023
Did anyone heard about selections like Willy , Ronald and Cullman ? I asked David Hughes but he could only point that Willy cames from Indiana, while Ronald and Cullman originated in Cullman AL.
Hello Lech,
I found this post at Facebook from Ronald in Iowa,
He reported of his pecan nuts growing on his place.
Hello,
do someone know the northern pecan selection “ Wiese “ or “ Weise “
I found this text from 2000 written by Dr Willam Reid;
