Planting an almost dead potted tree?

Just left the tree dump to drop off branches and there are several 6ft potted trees that a nursery must have dumped off there. One im confident us a cherry tree, others i could use as well. Not picky. Some have some life just a few green leaves on the bottom, green under all the bark i think. Could i cut the top 75% off these trees and plant them or would it be a waste of time?

I’d try it. You might find that with a little TLC they’ll do fine in a year.

I probably would save the major pruning until late winter…unless you’re way north of zone 6.

i got a montmorency cherry from TSC last summer that was dead except for 1 8in. green branch. guy gave it to me for $7. got home and cut off the dead wood and planted it. the 8in. branch grew to about 18in. and a few more branches came out from the stump as well. its about 2ft. high now and still putting on new growth.

Thats pretty much what these trees look like. Some green leaves only on the bottom foot.or so. I cut the top 4 ft off and that all looked pretty dry. Ill plant it somewhere tomorrow and see what happens.
