Hello everyone! So after researching quite a bit, I’m looking for the following varieties of Pluots: Flavor King, Flavor Queen, Flavor Grenade, Flavor Supreme, Dapple Dandy, Emerald Drop and Splash. My farm is located in PA, but I’d be willing to drive anywhere on the East Coast to purchase these from a reputable nursery. I prefer to avoid the mail order companies given that they keep trimming (jack the ripper level pruning) the trees ungodly. Any suggestions would be appreciated for larger trees, even if they must be mail ordered. I’ve looked at DWN and most of the dealers are out West. Thanks again everyone, looking forward to some knowledgeable replies.
I think DWN ships trees all over. I saw potted DWN fruit cocktail (plums and maybe peaches) at a Iowa-local nursery this spring. In fact, all of their stone fruit was from DWN. Probably not the best supplier to use since DWN doesn’t probably understand Iowa stone fruit growing conditions, but they get this far east.
You might call DWN and ask if they have a supplier in your area.
I know just the place for you! Conestoga nursery in East Earl, PA has great big trees. This spring I got a big Contender peach on Lovell rootstock (DWN tree, most their trees are) for $35.
I called few days ago to see if they have any plum trees left over but they said no and they should get another shipment in fall. I don’t think they have much to choose from in the summer/fall but in the spring they have a great selection.
Just called they don’t carry Pluots sadly. Thank you for the potential lead.
I wouldn’t recommend Emerald Drop or Flavor Supreme for you, they both crack badly (ED is my worst) and FS is a very Stingy setter. FK, FQ, FG and DD are sold by ACN, so I think they are generally ok for mid-Atlantic states. I got my pluot trees from Bay Laurel on citation and they are the most vigorous trees that I have, even though the roots were well pruned.
What’s your take on Splash @Ahmad and do you have any recommendations as replacements for FS and ED? When you say cracking, do you mean as a result of excessive rains? I’ll admit I’ve had fun with my donut peaches, but really haven’t encountered something to date that I can’t grow or get to set. I’ve worked with some rather difficult plants being a commercial farmer.
Yes, in response to heavy rain. My Splash pluots are probably a couple of weeks away from ripeness, so can’t judge taste, still they seem somewhat crack resistant. It’s also a few years too early for me to judge fruit set, but I am optimistic, even though it produced about 20 blossoms only, every single one of them developed into a fruit. On the other hand, FS produced hundreds of blossoms and only about 20 became fruit and half of them dropped immaturely.
Alternatives that I am contemplating are Satsuma, Lavinia and Laroda (based on experiences of other folks who have grown them in the wet north east); these are plums though. Spring Satin is also highly praised, I have it as a second leaf tree, ate a single fruit of it only, and is very good.
Thank you for sharing your colloquial knowledge, I already set up a buy with ACN! Definitely helped me make some decisions and will help with future choices regarding pluots. If you’re ever in the area stop by farm, 283 Evergreen Road Shermans Dale PA. I’ll give you some free fruit for the advice.
