Polar Vortex in the Northeast

Very smart that fig will be warm and protected!

I am not in the north east but we are getting the same cold. It was -24 when I headed out on the ice to fish this morning just got back in and it shows that it made it to seven for the high today.(that is from the national weather service ) I wouldn’t even try growing something that wasn’t cold hardy around here so no worries about damage to anything .

Not bad…we see -20F almost every year but not this one. I think i’ve had -12F a couple times and that is it. We were up around 11F this afternoon, but a large deck of clouds (snow) just moved in as the sun set so the temp is actually suppose to rise overnight (and we are suppose to see 2 to 4 inches of snow tomorrow). Next week looks mild, as does the rest of the month. Once we get into March, the subzero temps become very rare.

There is a certain influential family that flies into our airport from California and many a time I have seen them get off their G5 in shorts and flip flops in the dead of winter here and I always wonder what were they thinking. Now I know !

Daytime highs in the 70s, nighttime lows in the 50s. This cannot be February! I’m already dreading summer :frowning:

Catch anything? For lower MI we are not bad it got down to 0 which is the coldest this year. A lot better than last year!

It was apparently -10 this morning here. I’m glad I didn’t start pruning peaches yet. Last year, same deal as far as Feb being the heart of winter. It really complicates my pruning schedule where most of the winter I can only prune apples.

I’m going to guess that this is winter’s last roar and temps will stay above 0 for the remainder and start pruning stone fruit and pears next week. Got to get moving on it if I’m getting it all done before April. Last year I may have lost a few peach trees because I pruned them preceding sub-zero weather.

Awoke to -15°F, which is far below the range for this warm winter. The previous low for this winter was 6°F last month. The highest overnight low was 41°F just a couple weeks ago. Looks like another lesson in bud hardiness… or lack of. Like Drew said, the trees probably aren’t nearly as hardy as they were at this time last year.

I don’t think they will be less hardy than last winter- last time we got some very sudden cold temps in early winter and I think its been cold enough lately to keep the trees in freeze protection mode. The mild spells have been consistently interrupted with colder temps after not more than 3 days, I think.

How warm have you been? 50F? 60F?

I myself feeling it’s been warm, and the trees are not that hardy, I bet this cold takes a toll in fruit buds to whole trees. Part of it is due to the zone change. I went from 5 to 6 and so many zone 6 plants planted around here are dead now.
Yeah I’m going to prune next week too, so I’ll be sending scion out. I’ll contact all privately. I may not have much time after this, so I need to get this done. I’m going to have a busy year, sucks!

I’m not sure how cold it got here, but it was at least -9F. My outside temp sensor died at that point, even though it is supposed to work to -40F. I brought it back inside in the morning and it came back on…Ugh. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was down to -11 or -12F. I guess that should give me a good test of WiltProof.

It was around -13 F last night. A filter water pipe at my kitchen sink was frozen but not the regular water pipe, kinda weird.

I use an app, PWS Weather Monitor, that is pretty helpful in these types of situations and throughout the year as well. Here’s a screen shot.

It is probably the batteries. I have the same thing happen. In very cold weather, they recommend lithium batteries vs alkaline. I have some rechargeables i use in mine, and they don’t last long when its below 0F.
