Potato review

This year I grew two potatoes, from Maine Potato Lady. Plants were dying back, so last week I cut them off at ground level, and dug a bunch today.

Keuka Gold:

I harvested a couple hills today. A Yukon-Type but seems to have higher yield and larger potatoes. One thing to watch out for on this variety is that the tubers can be 18 inches away from the crown, I chopped a lot more up with my fork that I would’ve expected. Some of them are cresting the 1-pound mark. Some minor scab, about 10% have wireworm damage. Although developed for New York State, they seem to do extremely well here in Maryland. Grows like a Kennebec (vigorous, indestructible plants, but tender skinned, easily bruised tubers), but with light yellow flesh.

Lilly:

One of the German yellow potatoes. Smaller sized, about as big as a Yukon, similar texture as well. Tubers set close to the crown, so if you stick your fork in about a foot on either side and just loosen, you can get most of them out with very little chance of damaging them, unlike the Keukas. No scab, but about 25% have wireworm damage, 10% moderate to severe (mostly at one end of the bed). Most of these run 5 to 9 ounces.

Decent plant but daintier, and seems more prone to insect, fungal, and viral issues than Keuka, and it seems like I was less likely to accidentally nick or bruise the skin while harvesting them.

Both are similar to one another in flavor and texture, and both are more or less the same as Yukon gold as far as versatility. Lilly is a bit deeper of a yellow.

Makes me wish I had room to grow potatoes. Those are nice.

Good report!

I used to get a lot of scab on some varieties and so for the last couple of years I’ve planted mainly Red Norland, and about a half row of Yukon Gold.

I have to put garden sulfur right in the hole at plant-out, but it seems to really help with the scab. My soil leans to the alkaline so…
