I was wondering what the extent of trauma would be by un-potting and moving my potted trees. All of my trees were un-potted and placed in heavy duty garbage bags (rootball and all) with some water. They had to live in a truck for three days. Since their pots were very large and heavy, the pots had tombe placed first, then each tree was unwrapped, root pruned and top pruned and returned to their pot. This was done with 20 trees of various sizes. Ten trees being close to 8-10’ tall. It was a big job. This took place last November. Now it is May, and both white peaches faired poorly. Only one of the two peaches have set 3 peaches only. The cherries (Montmorency) has many cherries. It is so reliable! The Griottella cherry had the most blooms of all of my trees but has dropped most of its fruit. But there will be enough to try. They are ripening now. My apricots did very well and I will have plenty of fruit from them. The big surprise is my Quetsche plum. There are so many they are uncountable and have not yet started to drop. I hope they don’t . I have had this tree for 6 years, so it is ready to hold fruit. Also all of my citrus was pruned very hard and it smells like pure jasmine on my terrace. There are so many blossoms. The two large figs are fine and producing. I am sad about the peaches as one was new last year and had many blooms this spring. Here are some pics. Hello from the south of sunny France! Mrsg
should be fine
They’re fine, just sad about a summer with no homegrown white peaches!
Mrs. G.,
Those trees look good. I have moved several type of fruit trees from pots to pots and pots to ground and vise versa. Apples, pears, plums and cherries seem to handle my abuse of them rather well.
Peaches have relatively shallow roots with feeder roots that go wide more than deep. It’s possible that your peach trees were not happy with root pruning. (not sure how severe their roots were pruned off). Also, how wet was their soil during those 3 days? As you know, peaches do not like wet feet.
They will fully cover by next year.
Very impressive!
Do you root prune those trees? If so, how often?
What are you using for potting soil?
Thanks! Thats good news. There was just enough water to keep the soil damp, not wet. They had their own truck! After having most of the trees for 6 years, I didn’t want to lose them. ![]()
I use a mix for fruit trees that I can buy in bags. I buy soil for citrus in bags as well. It is excellent soil, with small shreds of bark. The citrus soil, has a bit of sand in the mix.
The soils here are very specific, as I live in the major stone fruit growing area of France. Cherry season is just beginning!
My white peach in pot almost died last year. Fortunately, a small new branch sprouted. I let it grow and it now becomes a new trunk.
I don’t like growing fruit trees in pots. Too much work and too heavy to move them in bc and out every winter.
Your pots are huge and you don’t need to move them for winter protection. That’s the best.
Yes, I am also in zone 9b which really helps. It is summer here now. Very different. ![]()
