Growing conditions have not been good in the northeast this year but apple growers in some areas had good crops. I’ve been buying apples that were grown and shipped from northern NY. Prices have been 59 to 79 cents a pound. Yesterday I bought them for 39 cents a pound. These are good quality apples. Hard to understand how they make a profit.
Are you retailing them or processing them?
Those are retail prices from a supermarket that sells in NY, NJ and Connecticut. I’m just eating them.
I live in NY among the apple farms. Because of the Chinese tariff I believe many apple growers who have large farms here have a surplus and will not make much profit or in fact loose money this season. I know my neighbor was planning on clearing the woods between us to plant more trees but that has not happened.
WOW, I thought you must have been talking small lot wholesale prices. The supermarket may be selling at cost as a loss leader. It’s common, especially around the holidays.
I returned to the store to see if they had any more 39 cents apples. They where clearing out the NY State apples at 19 cents a pound. The new ones where Washington State at 1.27 to 1.97 a pound. I bought some NY Empires and Cortlands at 19 cents.
