Propagating from seed success!

Trivial silly post as I take a break…

I’m trying to propagate a bunch of stuff from seed; first to see what works best from seed, and second to experiment with bare rooting over winter.

Out of 32 larch seeds this guy popped! Either an over achiever or a 2.7% success rate… Time will tell.

One small step for men (or larch)…

Did you stratify them?

Nope, big mama nature did that. Earlier this year I found a larch tree with cones from last year.

didnt think you guys had larch there. they are all over here esp. in wet spots.

Not really. The ones you see are from nurseries and planted on purpose.

i love larch for the fall color. during late grouse season i like to walk the edge of stands of larch. the grouse come in there to feed on the seeds and stick out like a sore thumb when the yellow needles coat the ground. ive even saw the rare, protected spruce grouse in there.

Well it looks like it was indeed a 2.7% success rate, not another one sprouted. I imagine late spring seeds that have been rained on a few times may not be well suited for propagation.

Follow up plan is to harvest fresh seeds to stratify over the winter.
