Pruning my Francken pear

To the pear experts:
I was pruning my Francken pear today and got a few punctures from one branch with very sharp spines, is this a signal that the scion died and needs replacing or do some productive pears turn spiny as they grow?

I don’t know. Clark here told me that “Small Yellow Pear” loses all its’ spines. That’s what is happening to my “Small Yellow Pear”. It’s gotten large. I grafted it on a lot of roots only a few years ago and it hit 20’ tall in 2.5 years.
