Pruning times

The only damage I’ve seen has been when it gets into single digits after pruning. We can get down to 15 right into early April so pruned peaches I manage often are exposed to that.

But I’m sure if I was in your zone and could hold off that long I would. I do for my own trees and just wait until they are in bloom. I like to bring is some from the showier trees inside for my wife. It’s become a rite of spring for me.

To me, the main advantage to waiting until bloom is being able to see where the flowers are after the threat of damaging frosts to flowers is past. However, I almost always get away with pruning client trees earlier. I can’t even remember ever regretting pruning dormant trees except that one time it fell into single digits right after and those were also young trees transplanted from my nursery the year before.

It is even likely that I got away with that before.
