Question for the Pecan Experts

I was wondering if Pawnee can be used as an inter-stem to promote more dwarfing characteristics in other Northern Pecans.

I bought some small Pawnee trees this year with the understanding that it was more disease resistant than it really is, so I don’t want to grow Pawnee anymore, but would ideally like smaller pecan trees as space is an issue.

Pawnee is not a small variety of pecan. Cheyenne is the only commercially available tree that normally matures somewhat smaller on average. I don’t think interstems will work to reduce size of a pecan tree. It is more likely to work if the rootstock is a naturally smaller variety. Unfortunately, there are no pecan rootstocks that reliably produce smaller trees.

Other than that, definitely graft to something else that is reliable in your area.

Thanks for the advice.
