Rabbiteye vs Southern Highbush blueberry flavor

I didn’t have much luck with southern high bush unless it was a late bloomer. I could not delay bloom long. Seem tolerant of cold. Most years a warm day would get them going. It didn’t take much. I gave up trying.

Which did you find to be late bloomers? My idea right now is to get Legacy since it has both NHB and SHB genetics.

Might I ask what make you graft over Tifblue? Was something wrong with Tifblue? Just curious.

Tifblue ripens later than my other blueberries, and since I don’t usually water my blueberries (except this year because of drought I’ve had to water) the quality of the fruit on Tifblue is poor. I think they would be much better if I watered them during the summer, but they’ve always been my least favorite variety when treated the same as my other blueberries. The plants are vigorous and productive, but the flavor and fruit quality is not great. Again, I think it’s my fault for not giving them enough water when they are ripening fruit, but another later rabbiteye called Ochlockonee is better in my experience, even without any extra watering.

Thanks for the reply and the information. I have one or two of those that I was going to plant in the ground this year but the time got away from me and haven’t done that so that would give me time to decide what to do with them.

Mostly the hybrids like you mention legacy which is reliable here also Pink Lemonade which i think is rabbiteye also Nocturne although it too might be rabbiteye i know more exist but i don’t remember them?

This makes perfect sense because Pink lemonade is noted for having a high heat unit requirement to break dormancy, even though it has a low chilling hour requirement
