Rain didn’t happen - newly planted onions

Planted some onion plants yesterday. Soil is quite moist, but since I have a broken foot and can’t drag the hose around, I was unable to water them.

Yesterday’s forecast was for 0.5” of rain, which didn’t and probably won’t happen per radar.

Will they be ok? Soil is quite moist, but watering in to me was more about settling the soil around the roots.

My kids can’t seem to water without shooting a jet of water at them, plus the hose is in a pretty inaccessible place for them to get (was stored for winter).

if the soil was moist to begin with, id think they would be fine. were they bulb sets that were dormant or actually green plants?

I think they should be OK. They may not start growing as roots do not have good contact with soil, but they will be stored safely in cool moist soil till good rain. How long is your row(s)? I always use watering can on newly planted onions. It may be some challenge to your kids they will be praised for

4 5’ double rows

I could have the kids use a watering can, but it’s a LONG walk from the spigot - 200’ down hill.

green plants.

We have a week before a good rain is forecast.

I know they selling green sets in bunches. They lay patiently in store til planting. So if your kids can water them by hands - great. No - your onions will still most likely survive

Rain still didn’t happen. Got 0.06” today and it’s over.

After such a wet start, we haven’t had a decent rain in 9 days now.

I think I am going to have to have the 10-year-old drag the hose and sprinkler 200’ down the hill.

It took an hour to get the kinks out of the hose, but it’s done.

Try running 200’ of hose down a hill!
