Reminder

The weather is warming quick this year. Try to collect your scion woods now while they are still in dormant stage and before buds break. Happy grafting.

It’s super cold here, with no end in sight. The ground hog says 6 more weeks of winter too  It’s 17F right now.

It is weird here in Z5 Omaha. We are getting Temp in the 40-50’s.

Tony-

Yesterday the model had mid/upper 60Fs into Omaha later this month. It still does this morning.

Seems like the western states have been warm for years, and the eastern states, not so much.Actually way below normal. Your turn! Give us some heat! The weather is very strange. The only good thing for us, is no early dormancy breaks.
I want to wait on scion myself till next month. I’m too afraid to take it during this cold weather. We do have some 30-40’s coming though, much warmer than usual. Well for a week, then back to the teens and 20’s.

Minus 13 air temperature here today, minus 22 with the windchill. No rush on scions, grin. Did 3 grafts today on potted stocks, hope they take:)

Zone 7 friends- are you cutting scions early this year? My normal time is late Feb here in 7B.

Really warm here too Tony, I cut some lanti jujuli and sent it to a member this week. I felt the same way about the weather, supposed to be in the sixties here next week

@Matt_in_Maryland @scottfsmith When do you Marylanders generally cut your dormant scions? Are you cutting now? Thanks. Steve

I cut and sent stuff two weeks ago. Scott cut some stuff last week.

Tony,
I’m not collecting a lot this year due to time constraints. I’m skipping all but the most necessary pruning.

I am planning to graft over those large Mulberry understocks that We did the Che tree experiment that failed to edible Mulberries like Oscar, Kokuso, Illinois Everbearing, and Girardi. I will prune them to about 8 to 9 feet tall and cover them nets for bird protection.

Excellent idea Tony. I’m playing it by ear on grafting this year.

I usually collect scions in late Jan through Feb. End Feb has always still been fully dormant in my orchard. Persimmons I like to collect in December if I remember, to avoid cold damage on scions.

I have so far collected a few things for others but have not yet grabbed the things I am going to move to other spots.
