Report on persimmon grafting so far near Houston

Looks like only one of 30+ whip/tongue kaki persimmon grafts failed. I started March 18. Have forced the bud on some 50+ tee buds but still waiting for the buds to grow. Many of the rootstock came from Missouri Dept of Conservation. Out of 100, approx 60 were big enough to graft. Also had 20 larger 3/4 - 1 inch rootstock from Womacks nursery. Have had a couple bark grafts take off growing with one failure. Waiting a few more weeks for the rest of the tee buds. Tee bud or bark graft is my preferred graft. Have several friend with lots of room to grow out the kaki. Waited for the bark to slip and leafing out before grafting. Still have 4 out of 16 of Womack rootstock not leafing out.

Sure looks like I will end up with 100 grafted kaki persimmon trees. The 40 whip/tongues are all pushing and the tee buds are starting. Interesting tidbit on the tee buds. I’ve been tee budding kaki for many years yet last year they nearly all failed! My fall chip buds had a 90% failure rate with purchased bud wood at that! Now getting back on track with grafts almost all taking once again!

Also cleft grafted 4 meiwa x nagami citrus trees. This kumquat is very late to ripen and color up and sour. Budwood came from a guy I sold a tree to 10+ years ago. I just happened to meet him at a scion exchange by accident. Tee bud doesn’t work with kumquats for some reason which is why I cleft grafted. By some miracle a bark graft of marumi kumquat took a few years ago.

How does the Kaki taste like ? Is it better/different than Tanenashi/ Hachiya ?
