Wondering if anyone has a preference for one of the clove currant cultivars over any of the others and why. any details on the differences beyond what all of the plant nurseries say would be greatly appreciated! From what I can tell there are only 3 cultivars currently available. Missouri Giant, Crandall Black, and Black Topaz.
I just have experience with Crandall purchased from a local nursery. It is very productive and sweet. It’s a great plant here. Supposedly not all Crandall cultivars are the same.
I’ve been growing an orange fruited clone that I got from a wild stand on a friend’s property. Since I’ve had it, my chickens have taken all its fruit, so I have not yet been able to confirm if it is keeping the same quality or yield it had when I originally tasted it wild, but hopefully this year it’s tall enough for the chickens to leave me some fruit from it. I recall them being citrusy and it haunted my memory for years from the time I tasted it till I got my own clone of it.
Mine is probably a different “variety” of Ribes aureum, than what you’re referring to, but technically Ribes odoratum should be written as Ribes aureum var. villosum.
I have Crandall, it doesn’t like my cool summer climate so much, not a issue for most places though. I would plant all three if i was you. most people have/talk about crandall.
