Rollinia deliciosa, also known as Biriba, is a delicious and large yellow fruit native to the Amazon. This fruit tree can grow tall enough to reach 20 or more feet and can handle full sunlight or semi-shaded areas. It requires a moderate amount of water on a regular basis and flourishes in the USDA Zone 9-11. It cold region it can be grown in pot.
The Biriba tree is fruit-bearing three to four years after planting. The fruit has a bumpy, yellow exterior, and tastes like a creamy lemon sherbet or a lemon meringue pie. It can be harvested by cutting the stem when it’s ripe. Its shelf life is only a few days off the tree, and, if it needs to be stored, it should be placed in the refrigerator, as this will prolong its shelf life by up to one week, though the skin will turn dark in the process.
Biriba fruit is known for its healthy benefits, as it is rich in Vitamin C, phosphorus, iron, and carotene. It is also known for its carbohydrates and proteins, which are essential for a balanced diet. When this delicious fruit is in season, an average tree can produce anywhere from 100 to 200 fruits. They can be used to make jams, jellies, juices, ice creams, and is a great addition to fruit salads.
I had it right off the tree in the Amazon in Brazil, it was probably not quite ripe, so I’d rate it below soursop, but I loved it like I have all the fruits in that family (I still need to try pawpaw, I planted so many!)
I had good and bad but man I planted the seeds of a really good one and mine flowered after the second leaf. It grew 10’ too I need to chop it back. Tasted like a pineapple banana pear. They expensive here too. I still want to try a pawpaw and soursop.
