Shenandoah Red Apple?

Anyone know the background on this one? Woman at orchard had no clue. Grown in Winchester VA.

“Apple X-6398” refers to an advanced breeding selection of the apple, not a specific cultivar, and was studied for its fire blight resistance and its genetic contributions to improved fire blight resistance in apples. It was a subject of research, along with the cultivar ‘Enterprise’, to identify quantitative trait locus (QTL) alleles that confer resistance to fire blight, a serious bacterial disease of apple trees.

Thanks. Glad to see a good apple finding its way into production rather than lost forever after research was done.

Now I want it :joy:

Starting on the last bag out of my storage refrigerator. These have been my wife’s favorite apple all fall and winter. Still crispy and juicy with a refreshing apple juice flavor. Been eating Goldrush and Suncrisp this week as well. This one has kept better than those two which are starting to wrinkle. My goal by spring is trying to find a tree of it for my orchard.

New update Feb 28. The main person for VT apple program says it’s not available and they don’t have it in their research blocks. Only one grower has it. He didn’t say, but it is a small apple which I expect is too small for commercial success where people want big apples. I like the size. A big fat apple is more than I want to eat on the go.

The “Shenandoah” apple listed at BHCF is the one from VA Tech. But, according to google search, “Apple X-6398” was developed in France. So, apparently they are not the same apple. I am more interested in the Winchester apple as it seems to be the France selection and the FB resistant variety. If you are able to get scion of it you’ll be my hero

Any chance you remember the name of the orchard you went to?

The apples in the photo with the sign explaining its background were grown at Fruit Hill orchard in Winchester. They were loaded on truck and hauled to family farm and produce stand in Palmyra Va. It also is named Fruit Hill Orchard. I believe that location is run by grandson.

I work for VT and got a dead end tracking it that way.
