Sick plum

I have a gold plum that is aprox 5years old last year it did great. It made good plums and was doing fine. Then this year it came out fine started blooming doing great. Then the leaves and blooms started dying on the tip of one limb. The rest of the tree looks fine. I will post some pictures and it is still hard to see the whole problem. If anyone has any suggestions it would be really appreciated.

John, it is hard to tell from that picture but you may have ambrosia beetles attacking your tree. I when through that the last two years so I sprayed my trees this year just to have them kill my pomegranate. Do you see toothpick like sawdust coming out of your tree? In the 3rd picture at your arrow looks like an attack, also maybe further down that same limb above the arrow on the last picture.

yes it has the toothpick saw dust in 2 or 3 places is there any spray that will control them. I have never had this problem before. some of my fruit trees are 10 to 15 years old. I normally do a stringent spray program after bloom. Should I cut this limb out or can it be saved?

Once the beetles are in the tree little can be done. A pyrethroid will kill them before they can bore in and you may want to spray now if you arenโ€™t already doing so for PC to keep any more from boring in. Make sure to spray the whole tree down to the ground. I spray dormant oil right before bud break and I add a pyrethroid to the mix and have had no problems this year. You will probably lose that limb so cut it and burn it.
They are devastating and easily kill a tree and there is nothing you can after they bore in, just spray before they attack. My pawpaw had three in the trunk and died and my apricot had well over 100 and also died. Luckily only those too trees were hit last year.

thanks for the info. I have already cut and burned the limb and another that was suspect it really did not show anything was just being cautious. I will spray in the morning. I sprayed with dormant oil fungicide and Triazicide before bud brake. After seeing your post I went to the web and checked. They said to spray in early spring. I have never started spraying for borers in early spring. WILL from now on. This scares me to death I have over 100 fruit trees in a small area. I did not need another bug!!! I will keep posting as the year progresses Thanks again :sob:

After they bore in it takes several weeks for the sawdust to come out. First you will see watery sap pour out of the hole for about a week and then nothing for a week and then sawdust after that. Once the leaves start to wilt it has been a while so you probably got all the damage you are going to get this year but its best to spray just to make sure.
I grew 2 pawpaws for 4 years and was excited to see flowers on the tree for the first time. Then one was killed and I have to start over. I have read that there are 2 generations per year but I have never had any issues in the summer just early spring. I actually sprayed well before bud break 2nd or 3rd week in Feb. and then every 2 weeks.

sprayed today. From now on I will start spraying first of feb and spray every 2 weeks. Thanks again . Hope I got them all !!! :fearful:
