If your tree is what @sockworth stated, North Carolina Extension service is not as optimistic about this tree as Edible Landscaping is. Maybe, planting it in Indiana makes a difference.

You are going to need to give it 2 years to see the true results. The summer hair cut will result in new scafolds but they have to harden into mature wood then develop buds.
