Small ejector pump suggestion needed

I am building self watering containers from 50 gallon plastic drums. They will keep significant amount of water that I will need to pump out before winter as I don’t want to empty the containers each year. The water gets into the bottom reservoir from vertical PVC pipe. Idea is to have some kind of small pump that have a hose that I can put through the same pipe to the bottom of the reservoir and pump the water out. The pump shouldn’t pump water through itself as water may contain some dirt in it. My husband says it called “ejector pump”, but what I see by that name in Google are monsters - heavy and expensive. Hubby also says he can make one out of spare compressor, but if I can buy something under $50 I would do that instead putting another task on his long “to do” list. Any suggestions?

There are a lot of 12V pumps on the market. They come in various styles and most like mine have a small in line filter to remove anything that would damage the pump. Look under RV water pumps, boat bilge pumps, etc…

-If still building the containers, could you not just put a drain on the side of the barrel about two inches up from bottom? something like a 3/4 pipe nipple through the barrel side with rubber gasket and jam nut on each side, then a pipe cap or cutoff for convenience.

I have a cheap hand siphon pump which works great if there is not a lot of water to pump. Very versatile. I use it for lots of things where I can’t pour out the water.

No need to plug something it if you don’t have to. :blush:

@txpanhandle1, we discussed it today, and found it kind of difficult to implement and not very reliable, as it may be clogged by some soil that gets into reservoir. This is when idea with pump came up…

@JustAnne4,
Yes, this is exactly what my hubby found in his garage an gave me! This is perfect, better then using 50’ electric cord from the house to the low level garden.
