I have been trying to think of how to store apples better. I’ve used a cardboard box up against the basement wall, outside the “finished” room down there. it is about 55F year round in that little spot. but there isn’t much room and the apples aren’t quite cold enough to last well.
i don’t have a spare fridge and i don’t really want to get one, no room! i was thinking maybe a insulated box, on the enclosed porch out back- insulated all but the back of the box, which i could jam up against the house wall to catch any little heat loss from that, but still have the cold from outside. it gets freezing here but maybe that will keep them at just above?
also “some paper bags in a cardboard box” seems like bad idea too, one bad apple and the whole box goes. what kind of containers you all using? i don’t like plastic, maybe baskets, wood? not too sure. i will use plastic if there’s nothing better for it though
and humidity. it is a bit damp at times in the basement spot, not too bad. dry?
i saw someone say they use the crisper setting in a fridge, someone else saying they put a damp paper towel in a ziplock full of apples.
now we go pick every fall and get at least 20lbs to store away, and last year we also had some of our own. which may be more this year too. so bigger space better!
how are you storing your apples?
