Storm damage on my cornelian cherry

Went outside today and found my tree bent out of shape . Lucky it’s above the graft but that’s a lot of growth! Would you recommend grafting tape or cutting it off?

Ouch! Sorry about that damage.

I know what you mean wanting to save that growth because cornelian cherry grows very slowly, at least in my experience.

Tying a splint to both parts to straighten it out may work. Cornelian cherry wood is very strong, but I think you’d have a permanent weak point in the trunk.

I would prune off the broken bit cleanly and let a new leader grow and take over.

Thank you! It happens. Maybe I should be glad I made the rabbit cage and stake as high as I did- though maybe that is why it broke where it did…

I’ve tried wrapping it since there was still 20% connection, everything looked healthy, and I caught it in less than 24 hours. Either way I may lose about 6 months but at least the tree is very likely to make a full recovery

I tried grafting but I think the graft may be failing. The leaves below the graft look lively but those on top are very sad. Do you think the graft failed? If so, I’ll probably make a clean cut and let it keep growing

I think it is dead, I’ll cut off the top as originally suggested
