Strange weather - Will it get our blooms and fruit?

Even in 2012 the long heatwave came in March, not February

We’ve had 26 days already this yr above 70F and 5 above 80F. The unusual yr here is when we don’t get freeze damage. In fact I’d say I’ve seen only a handful of those since 1971. More normal is 2-3 damaging spring freezes.

I got out tonight after work to check on my trees. I have Nankings blooming like crazy, little leaves on seedling peaches, little leaves on my pears with flower bud clusters starting to show, peach buds turning pink.

We are due to have snow, a week from tomorrow. Check the weather sites. I will cover my trees with tarps this year if it gets to freezing.

Not sure since the temp will still be around 40 during the day. It could be rain.

Mam, we suffered so badly last year it would be horrible if we had the same senario this year! Especially the peach trees as they are loaded with buds this year. How are yours?

My peaches have flower buds. I won’t say loaded. The loaded flower buds are Shiro plum and Black Gold pears. Loaded.

Black Gold cherry and Korean Giant flower buds survived last year late freeze without any issue. Shiro flowered but no fruit set because of the lack of cross pollination (Satsuma’s buds were all killed).

This year, I am betting on Black Gold cherry, Korean Giant pear and a few apples. Not much hope on peaches/nectarines or Satsuma.

Too warm, too early. Today, we were at 69F. Several cities and town in MA including Boston set record heat today.

We only got close to 50 degrees.

My peach is loaded with flower buds as well. And we had 70F today, with snow still under the peach tree… next few days are not very promising as well. 26F on Sunday night. But not even this that is bad… I can cover for one night… But there is more then a month ahead… With weather warmer then usual, but night freezing temps… Not much hope here…

Snow covered and 18F this morning…with a hard blowing NW wind. Only got about 1/2 the precip the models were saying so the snow cover is a little thin (few inches). Look like we go back into the 40Fs by Monday so we’ll probably lose most of this. Areas just to the west got a pile of it (over a foot)…

I had resigned myself to loosing peaches, which is fine since all my trees are young. But this is my Callaway Crab.

And my Harrow Sweet pears.

I don’t know if these are flower buds, but I wonder whether the cold I expect in March will damage the trees themselves if we see low 20s (which I realize is nothing for many of you)?

72 degrees right now after a few days hitting 80 lately. I’m used to getting a few warm days in the winter, but the amount of time we’ve been warmer makes if feel a lot more like 9A instead of 7A.

Those are pear flower buds that will shoot out and turn to blooms in a week or two. Many of my pears are at that stage. Some of my pears are lagging behind which makes me very happy this year. They can take lower 20’s at that stage but if they progress much further like many of us you’ll be in trouble.

Heat looks to build back in by March 10th or so… Should be right back to the summers for you.

Here in central MA, 3 days in the row of temp in mid to high 60’s (Thurs, Fri and today) has cause my pluots and apricots to show bud pushing. Tomorrow will go down to 30’s for a day and back up to 50’s for five more days.

I think those pluots and apricots will be toasted. Tell me that I’m wrong
