Sweetest Cornus Mas Cornelian Cherry?

I’ve grown both for years. The flavor is a bit different. Yellow is sweeter and less complex. I like it better.

Now that I’ve eaten fresh Cornelian Dogwood aka Cornus Mas, I agree that the seed holds to the fruit like a clingstone. Therefore pitting the Cornelian Dogwood fruit would be difficult.

hobilus, what do you do with the purée? Just eat it like applesauce or make things from it? Does it freeze well? I have planted three trees over the last 10 years, but only one is surviving and not thriving. No fruit.

Its an excellent jam/spread as is. Just stir in sugar to taste- no cooking or pectin required. It’s really nice in baked goods- thumbprint cookies, pastries and the like- its very rich flavored, so a little dab will do you.

I wonder if I will ever get a taste. Two out of three trees have died now.

I tried my “Yantarny” yellow cornelian cherries for the first time in August. No brix test but they were sweet and very good for fresh eating. The flavor was hard to describe but there were some tropical and citrus nones.

I’m looking forward to trying more cultivars next year. I just with these trees/shrubs would grow a bit faster!
