Tempted to grow a Candy Heart pluerry in 7a

As the title suggests. I have a santa rosa in ground for pollination.

I am in Asheville NC where we get hit with late frosts in April.

Candy Heart is a 500 chill hour tree

Can I be successful with ghis cultivar or will late frosts always doom me

I’d expect it to do about as well or poorly as the Santa Rosa. Online calculator says you’ll usually get enough chill for both. DWN says Santa Rosa only needs 300.

You’ll get enough chill hours…the issue likely could be spring frosts.

I’m in similar-ish climate. I have a Candy Heart 3rd year. It hasn’t fruited yet but I believe it will if weather cooperates. In hilly areas, not being in lowest spot matters a lot.

I find that candy heart is one of the most reliable producers here in Boise (7a). I have never had a year without fruit in the tree.

Last year we had solid 50 degree days in March then sudden freezes at night through mid April

I’ve had years like that and still gotten fruit from candy heart. I’m not saying it is guaranteed, but it is a reliable producer compared to some of my other varieties. It’s a great piece of fruit, will hang on the tree for a month and a half and get better and better. The trick is protecting it from animals because it turns color so soon.

Thank you for the encouragement. I will definitely try one here and maybe a flavor king pluot
