The Great Blueberry Contest

I feel polls are an underused part of this site, and I figure what’s better than a small tournament for someone’s fruit variety? Hopefully there’s enough people out there who have grown these! There will be 18 NHB blueberry varieties in this contest. After a period of time, I’ll edit the post to include the top 6 for a final battle royale for the top 2. Please only vote if you have tasted/grown at least 2 of the varieties listed in the bracket (brackets are in groups of 3). “Best” is subjective, and I’m okay with that! Some people want productive plants, some want big berries, some want sweet fruit… Feel free to mention your vote and varieties I missed in the comments.

I assume Darrow is referring to Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Darrow’ and not Vaccinium darrowii, “Darrow’s blueberry”?

That’s right, I’ve never heard of that one! Is it any good?

For example: Darrow Blueberry - One Green World

I haven’t had the opportunity to try the Darrowii. Darrow and Chandler two of my favorites though.

can’t grow blueberries here, but love the idea. I’ll be watching for the next tourney.

Maybe strawberries? Persimmons? Mulberries? What do you think? There’s probably too many apples and figs!

Weekend competition update. This Blueberry season keep the contest in mind!

As expected, blueray is crushing its bracket.

Chandler, in a small upset, is beating both bonus and Cara’s choice. Are Cara’s berries just too small?

Darrow and draper are neck and neck and leaving duke in the dust.

Hannah’s Choice, as expected, is leading its bracket but Elliot and Elizabeth have a vote. Probably still good berries!

Kabluey, as expected, is leading its bracket with legacy and liberty with a vote each. Similarly, all probably good berries!

Patriot has an edge over Spartan, but they’re neck and neck. Razz also has a vote and I suspect due to the rarity has not had more votes. Toro as expected is left behind.

I have some of the blueberries on this list, but it’s their first year so I cannot vote yet. One of my blueberries is Duke. What is not good about it? Flavour? Size?

I’m surprised Razz isn’t up there. I fell in love with it last year.

Also got a “Sweetcrisp” from plantmegreen and i think it’s a mislabeled razz but it’s also one of the best tasting blueberries I’ve had. I keep fighting myself to not buy anymore Razz variety because the one correctly labeled and possibly mislabeled ones were so good.

I have 4 kabluey’s with 2 of them very happy and starting to produce pretty well this year. I’m excited to try them without them being stressed lol. Last year, they weren’t very happy with the soil i had them in. I just repotted 2 more into some potting soil mixed with aging woodchips from whatever trees I downed last year and they seem very happy as well.

I think O’Neal should be up here somewhere too lol.

I love growing blueberries. They’ve been the first successful plants i started my journey with over 10 years ago.

Only reason O’Neal was left out is it’s not NHB.

I want to grow Razz, I suspect it isn’t getting the votes since it isn’t as common so people haven’t tried it (or it doesn’t have the classic blueberry flavor, and therefore is really good as a 5th plant but not a 1st plant). I can’t comment directly since I’ve never eaten it.

Ooh, subscribe! I haven’t tried enough them head to head to vote, but I’m curious what others think.
