Just wondering if anyone on this forum have the opportunity to get scions from The Old Apple Tree in Fort Vancouver?
I don’t have it but recall Burnt Ridge offering trees of it previously.
Just ran across this today:
Really impressive history!
I was given a sapling two years ago.
They won’t. I live here in Vancouver and while my name isn’t given credit back in May in these forums I was saying it needed tested after I read about the Apple lab, since this tree was so old and frail. I then told our mayor and city council. Looks like they followed through in good timing before it died.
Nobody sells saplings of it. It wouldn’t likely be legal either. It is owned by the city, their property. The reason I have a sapling is they gave away free ones every year to the first few people to go to the annual Apple festival.
Also you will not want a scion. This tree came from an English dessert Apple and is designated a greening Apple. It would make I think hardy rootstock, and is the matriarch of all the Apple tree varieties in WA. It isn’t a tasty Apple to nosh I am told.
I’m not clear on your reason for saying ‘it wouldn’t be legal’ to propagate from the old Vancouver tree.
