This is the first year that my French Prune has really set fruit. Does anyone have advice on how much thinning to do with euro plums? Also, given that this year should be my first harvest, any advice for euro plums would be appreciated.
almanac.com says:
European types do not require fruit thinning because they do not produce as much fruit as Japanese types. However, the fruit on these types should be spaced about 2 inches apart on each branch.
I agree with lordkiwi. Not only do euro plums not need thinning, they will also drop quite a few small plums during June. In the NE it is called ‘June drop’. Works like clockwork every year in RI. What I get in return is a nice sized, perfectly shaped Euro plum. The plums do not become larger. You will see some of the young plums turning yellow. They will simply die and fall off of the tree there is nothing you can do. Euro plums also drop plums a little further along in the season. Into July.(the purple varieties especially.) It is as if the tree is telling you what it can bear that year!
