Looks like all four of my persimmons are dropping their fruit. They’re only 3, so I guess that’s to be expected, but I was really hopeful this time around.
Anything I can do to improve my odds next year, or is it just a waiting game?
(Also seem to have gotten psylla. I will take out my frustration on them.)
I assume you mean Asian persimmons? I am frustrated with mine too. Four years old. Only ever seen one flower form… on the Chocolate variety. Nothing from Coffeecake.
They have the most bizarre growth habits. A big flush in spring which weighs the limbs down prostrate. They require staking or rope support at this stage. They sit in suspended animation for the duration of the summer. Then in early fall, they send out a second flush of growth that bolts straight up. Then it quickly hardens off for winter.
Look on the bright side, they are a lot faster than pears
They certainly do strange growth things, and that also depends on variety and stock - some varieties want to only grow up and some seem to want to only grow down. I had to cut back my Saijo this spring because it was a straight-up kind and it was blocking out two drooping-kinds on the north side of it. My old Chocolate stalled out 4-5 years ago, it barely grows each year and only puts out a few fruits. I planted a new tree by it to eventually replace it and I thought it would be dead by now but it just keeps plugging along. I think it has 3-4 fruits on it this year.
