I only tasted the free samples at the Cornell Store. These probably are apples from cold storage. From the samples, Shizuka was firmer, less tart/sweeter. Definitely not home grown.
It could be Shizuka is a better storage apple, anise flavors are delicate and seem to often fade in storage.

I have it on an M7. I get fruit off of it every year. Some years more than others but at least enough fruit every year to enjoy.
speaking of anise flavor @scottfsmith from your writings i found freyburg and grafted it last year to an older rootstock. It is growing great I hope to have a fruit on it next spring 2020.
