My one year old German thyme is sprawled out all over. We do use it for cooking but it’s also ornamental - can I cut it back and by how much to make it look better?

There is some inner growth - can I cut all the way back to this?

I cut all my thymes right back to the inner growth in spring and they seem to do well. As long as there are a few growing points left they grow back.
