TN/KY Ripening?

I’m gonna be in those 2 states on vacation the week after fathers day weekend anyone know of anything ripening at that time I could snag at a fruit stand or locally somewhere?

I contacted Reed Valley orchard in Paris, KY last week about what’s coming in. They said blueberries and black raspberries should be ready in about 2-3 weeks. Blackberries not until July. I think they also have cherry trees of some sort, that might be ripening, but didn’t ask about them. You can call them or message them on Facebook to be sure. They will be open on June 11th, but they are closed on Sun and Tuesday’s.

Even if they don’t have everything ready, it’s still a very nice place to visit. Hundreds of apple trees, quite a few pears and a stand of peaches as well. Plus, they grow a few veggies, although I doubt they have anything ripe yet. They’re just NE of Lexington.

Hey Dan! You know I live less than 1 mile from the TN/KY border and have lived and worked in both states on and off for 25 years. I ought to be able to help you out. But the TN/KY border is VERY long…about 6 hours from Middlesboro, KY (southeastern KY- on the border) and Union City, TN (northwestern TN- other end of border).; So I’m really interested in knowing what area you will be in and I very likely can help…although you are too early for the vast majority of fruits grown here and too late for Strawberries, which have become so big here that cities near me have strawberry festivals and one town (Portland, TN) has a big strawberry painted on all city vehicles and building. But I digress…lets find you some fruit!!! haha.

If you are in the Nashville, TN/Bowling Green, KY area then you are in my home territory. I would say that I MYSELF could offer some fruit but it’s too early in the season and besides that I lost most of my fruit to a late frost. Anyway, let me know where you’ll be and I’ll get you some info and leads to fresh fruit.

BTW Dan, you (and anyone else who is going to be near TN) should definitely check out the “Pick TN First” website. Pick TN 1st is a neat effort to promote TN grown produce, farmers markets, pick-your-own orchards, etc. It was created by the Dept of AG, the Univ of TN extension service, FFS, and farmers and has been very successful.

Now, all that being said, their web site drives me nuts sometimes because it is (IMHO) organized very poorly and illogically and often has errors, dead links etc. It is so aggravating because I know it actually contains wonderful, accurate, up to date information that is very nice to have. The problem is I just don’t think it is very easy to find a lot of that stuff that people are looking for. But PLEASE PLEASE don’t let me discourage you from using it. By all means, go there. Just be sure you hunt around a good deal, try different areas and click on different things. THe good stuff is there, it just takes more effort than it should to find it (again, in my humble opinion)

It has a list (by county, which again isn’t the best way if you are from out of state and don’t know which county is close to which other county) of every single you-pick orchard in the State of TN. It also has every farmers market in TN, other places that sell fresh TN grown fruits and veggies like roadside stands and little country markets and Amish stores, and so on.

OK, that was way too much introduction. Go check out the site
