I’ve got a couple Honey crisps that I want to work over to Harrison and Wickson Crab.
Since the Honey crisps are slow growers, would it be better to remove the whole trunk and graft straight to the rootstock? Seems the H.C. interstem would keep growth slow. The trees are about 2.5" dia. but the rootstock is 4".
Can you do something like side graft below the interstem directly on the stock without having to cut out the HC?
I oftentimes do a modified T-bud, but instead of the bud, I insert a scionwood stem prepared for bark graft into the T cut. I will then observe how the graft would grow before finalizing the cut. But that’s only if the tree is my own.
A friend of mine calls Harrison “An Absolute Monster” for rampant, rank growth. So, it occurs to me, maybe a HC inter-stem might calm down the Harrison a bit.
JoeReal, Yes I believe I can bark graft right to the top of the root.
Since it is 4" across I wondered if it was too big to heal properly.
hambone, Thanks for the heads up.
I planted two Harrison whips last year and they seem spindly. we’ll see if they shoot up this year.
