I’m planting a bunch of small caliper bare root hardwoods (oaks and maples, principally ) this fall. Is the training / pruning of young hardwoods similar to fruit trees? I haven’t found much literature on the web on training hardwoods, and no one mentions techniques such as spreading limbs, heading leaders and branches, etc. any good references?

Plant them and let them go. They’re not like fruit trees.
If you see multiple leaders at a young age then train to single leader.
