Has anyone tried Tropical Sunrise pluots?
I did, and I didn’t liked them. They were pretty bland and somewhat mealy.

That’s a pretty exterior color, at least the sun exposed areas. Right off hand I can’t remember trying any red pluots.
You never can tell with store bought fruit. Maybe they were picked too early and sat around too long.
Compared to other store bought pluots, these pluots were not so great.
Even buying at the same store, you do not know if they came from the same orchard. But even if they did, one may have been picked more prematurely then the ones you like better. Bland is a standard trait of early picked fruit.
I concurred!
I have not encountered any store bought pluot that is decently good! And I stopped buying them after so many enthusiastic/impulsive purchases for the sake of trying out new variety that’s on store shelf offers. Everyone of them is mealy and bland!
Maybe I’m not lucky enough…
Boy, I concur with Tom. I broke down and bought a few Dino Egg pluots at the store, recently. I bit into one, and it was so sour and inedible I actually had to spit it out. It is so frustrating. Growers seem to be able to pick other stone fruit on time, what’s with pluots? They looked so good, I expected them to taste like my Dapple Dandy (which btw, the 2nd one was so much better - not bland, and very delicious, to back to a better impression of Dapple Dandy). That’s really too bad. Now, I will say - if I buy pluots at the local Vista Farmer’s Market, they’ve been absolutely excellent. Local growers who know what they’re doing. In fact, there is one seller that grows about 5 or 6 different pluots, and always has samples out for folks to try. His booth is packed, always. Because he knows how to pick them.
It’s not hard to pick at the right time. When they begin to soften it’s time. What’s hard is getting nearly ripe fruit to the customer in good shape.
Store bought pluots generally are garbage… I have bought excellent nectarines but for some reason the pluots are just junk. The store bought plums are hit or miss…might find a good one here and there but overall a lot of mush/no flavor fruit.
If they’re all garbage then they’re being picked way too early.
I have had reasonable success buying pluots and nectarines at my local produce store. They have soft to touch fruit most of the times but that sometimes just means drippy bland fruit. The few times they have stellar fruit, I buy too few.
And I’m really disappointed with my favorite farmers’ market these days. All they seem to have are rock hard, overpriced dapple dandys.
When I lived in CA I found very little good fruit. It didn’t matter much where the fruit was bought: roadside stand, farmers market, big grocery store, or small store specializing in fruit sales. I think many bought and resold wholesale fruit picked too soon. It wasn’t until I attended DWN weekly fruit tours that I got a little great fruit. But even there the fruit on display was commercially ripe, ie green. I had to scrounge around for something softening up. Plus most fruit was large, over watered typical commercial stuff.
