Trying to trick pear into earlier fruiting

Some pears are just flat stubborn about bearing fruit. I tried something I read about here last year, and it seems to be working, but it’s strange:

The limb spurred up below the knot. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the knot, i.e. cut it out or let it stay.

The other thing is similar to girdling, but not quite the same:

Did that to three branches. We’ll see if I start to see spurring up on those branches next spring.
