Upper Midwest Growers

Butcher shop west of me not far sells 20 lb. boxes of walleye filets for $6.50-$7.50 lb a few times a year. Much cheaper than a MN boat registration, truck and boat gas, fishing license, bait, etc.

It is still more fun to catch your own though.

I bought a Contender from there last weekend. Grabbed the smallest one I could find for $20 to test next to my PF 24-C Cold Hardy. Worth noting it had 4” of soil above the graft line and the roots were significantly bound. Nothing a good cutting and de-soiling couldn’t fix but definitively not shovel ready so to speak

100% agree on the fishing experience. Back in the old days you could go up to Ontario and cross the border with a cooler of filets. Now they are super stringent on what you can bring back. I need to get out and do some pan fishing. The garden is full of worms right now.

Bought some thick geotextile fabric for the garden–6x100 roll. I’ll get that put down here soon. No more weed problems.

I finally finished my greenhouse i bought last fall. 10x14 double wall/aluminum. Would i do it again? Probably not. It was just me doing it and really requires some more hands just to speed things up. Over 300 bolts/nuts with various self tapping screws, etc. Whole thing will probably end up in the next county after a summer derecho! I still have to move dirt around/pavers/figure out a floor and some shelving. Anchor it more.

That is exactly the one I have always wanted…but then I ask myself “why”. And then where would it be put. The answer is always, “I don’t know.” So that dream goes right with the small tractor dream.

Well now i know exactly how it goes together so if you have questions. The directions are horrible. They really need to have real human pictures and not drawings. A few areas you can see where they could have better engineered it. I do like how much space you get inside. The ceiling is very high. It’s aluminum so no areas to rust or rot. The polycarb panels seem quality but check back in 10 years.

Even with the door open and the roof vents up the temp gauge is still showing around 100F. I might have to get a white cover for it this summer. Outside temp is like 50F.

Got my first row of fabric down. I’ll overlap one more row in this spot. This will be tomatoes.

This spot is south facing with garage blocking to the north so it is crazy hot back here.

Puget gold, Zard and tlor tsiran all had their first flowers open today. Hopefully not too early.

34 degrees is the forecasted low for next two weeks. Might have a shot

Puget Gold was my favorite eating apricot. I thought they were great. My apricots here are at the popcorn stage. Just about ready to go.

Does anyone in the Des Moines area want to try a meetup?

My shed ended up in the neighbor’s yard after the Good Friday microburst.

Got my two main orchards, a neighbor’s trees, and some scattered outliers sprayed with copper, oil, and NuFilm 17 today. About 25 gallons worth of spray.

Everything here leafing out with a vengeance.

If you don’t get any takers for in-person, I’d be glad to run a zoom meetup. We’d have to do it soon before the weather gets too nice and the weeds sprout. Preferably a mid-week evening.

Same here. My eyes are adjusting to the new green.

Got my onions all planted. Nights drop back to the freezing or below this weekend. I already have peppers on my potted pepper plant. I just overwinter one inside the house–they do just fine if you keep the bugs in check. A couple sprays of neem does wonders. The tomatoes in the greenhouse are already looking way better–my LED grow lights must be garbage.
