Anyone have experience with the AC Valley Sunset strawberry? I’m looking to add another SB and trying to decide which. It needs to be z3 hardy which limits it somewhat. And be a moderate runner as i maintain a permanent bed needing limited runners for replacement. And be delicious and disease resistant, of course! I considered Cavendish and Jewell but read both are susc to leaf spot, which I definitely have. Valley Sunset sounds like a possibility. Sue
We planted 25 Jewel’s last year and got a good crop this June. We also had a row of Earliglow’s. Neither one seemed to have any disease issues. Pertaining to your question, Jewel didn’t run (sucker) nearly as much as EG did.
Jewel’s fruit is pretty big (silver dollar size?) and good flavor, while E.G. had smaller fruit (quarter size), but was sweeter and had better flavor, IMO. Jewel seemed to produce more berries, and for a longer time, even though both varieties were done after maybe 2-3 weeks.
No experience with AC Sunset.
I’ve eyed AC Valley Sunset a few times myself, but ended up with AC Wendy and Cavendish. I’m highly impressed with Cavendish so far, though I’ve only had it a couple years now. Very hardy, tasty, and pretty productive. AC Wendy is maybe even hardier but not as productive for me. I haven’t had to deal with leaf spot yet though…
i have earliglow and evie 2 both grow well and are heavy producers. evie 2 produces right till a killing frost. both have many suckers. never heard of valley sunset but give them a try. nice thing about strawberries is if you don’t like them, pull them out and plant new.
