Virginiana Rootstock Appears Dead?

After passing by I noticed that all 4 of the Virginiana rootstocks I have looked dead or diseased. After a scratch test, the grafted wood above is totally fine, but the rootstock shows no green. I’m not sure how this is possible considering it’s supposed to be much hardier than my zone.

After a little digging around I came across this: http://webpages.charter.net/jtholdeman/PFLC1_QLH.pdf

It states that Virginiana’s roots are black giving the illusion of being dead. Black bark surrounds a porous yellow wood. Still… not seeing green worries me. Can anyone take a look at their American Persimmons and just give me a little comfort, haha.

Like you said, they look black and dead, don’t worry yet.

These D. virginiana were in the garage all winter and probably were exposed to 28F at the coldest. They were black before winter too.
