We Won! Well, this year

Last year the wildlife took the entire grape harvest. This despite us bagging each grape cluster with tulle AND deer netting AND plastic sheeting. They took everything.

This year we tried clamshells and it worked really well. We wouldn’t say it was perfect because the slots in the clamshells allowed wasps, earwigs, ladybugs, etc., to claim some of the harvest. The slots allow us to secure the clamshell to the grapevine using metal wires, provide ventilation and drainage when it rains so we didn’t want to block them.

It remains to be seen whether the wildlife will figure out a way to overcome the clamshells by next year’s harvest, but we’re hopefully optimistic.

Great results. They look delicious.

I’ve seen and tried several “bagging” methods. Yours gets the first prize.

After you harvest the fruit, they can go right on a fruit stand ready to be sold as they are “pre-packaged”

There is no telling how many of those we throw away every year

A big enough pest will open the clamshell. A big enough rat or a racoon will get in. I have used these with success for my grapes and figs.

And I thought they got their packaging in the store…
