I grafted Fuji 20 tears ago, one of my earliest grafts, and it doesn’t look healthy. Can anybody look at this picture and guess what’s what? It would be a pity to lose it, especially since it looks primed to produce nicely this year for the first time!
I have a small old Fuji tree, about 25 years. Some of the branches look like that. I never do anything to them as they still produce new branches and and fruits. If there are too many fruits, I would put a support under because the branch may break. Last year I put a gallon sized water bottle with some water, vinegar and sugar to attract the coddling moths, and covered the fruits later with tulle fabric. Most of the apples turned out very nice. Some of my plum trees have branches like that too, and they still produce fruits. Please note that I am in southern California so the air is mostly dry year round. I don’t know what will happen in the more humid weather.
I read on another post with similar bark that it may be due to fast growth, I believe they said. So perhaps it is like skin scars teens get in puberty. Not pretty but no big deal?
I had a couple of trees that did that after one summer of a LOT of rain. It is like some branches were swelling up from the rain issue not from any sort of diseases. They did not have any other issues other than the swelling and cracking of the branches.
